Though this issue is not there to stay forever, you may undergo difficult times for days, weeks, or months depending on the severity of the disease. Here is all that you may like to know about vertigo, its symptoms, and the treatment.

What is Vertigo?

Vertigo is the feeling of dizziness and spinning experienced by some people at heights. This is probably the dictionary meaning, but when you talk about the medical term “Vertigo”, it is the condition of disequilibrium of internal balancing organs and fluids that would offer the feeling of spinning. The person suffering from this condition will find the surrounding moving and hence would find difficulty in maintaining the balance. The medical science doesn’t associate this term with fear of heights. The causes of this problem are very well-defined and hence the line of treatment is also clearly available.

Causes of Vertigo

The causes of vertigo are mainly related to inner ear disequilibrium known as Peripheral Vertigo and are explained here.

The messages to the brain regarding, movement, gravity, and balancing are sent by labyrinth located in inner ear. The inflammation of this organ may be the main cause behind the imbalance. The probable causes of this inflammation are;

  • Vestibular Neuronitis– The inflammation caused due to infection of vestibular nerve.
  • Labyrinthitis – This is caused due to some type of viral infection in vestibular nerve and labyrinth.

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

It is popularly known as BPPV. This condition is the result of the disturbance in otolith particles. The calcium carbonate particles in the inner ear fluid accumulate in the canals of the ear giving the sensation of movement. The disturbance in BPPV will make the endolymph fluid keep moving even after the head stops its movement. Hence, wrong signals are received where you feel yourself moving even while in stationary position and get the spinning effect.

Meniere’s disease

This is the infection where fluid exerts high pressure on the inner ear. The infection is caused because of virus or bacteria. Other disorders of metabolism and immunity are also observed in this condition. The swelling called endolymphatichydropswould be experienced in episodes. The symptoms usually experienced are hearing loss and ringing in ears.

Apart from above mentioned causes, there are other possibilities for vertigo too as mentioned here.

  • Lowered blood flow in some areas of brain.
  • Ear surgery.
  • Injury in head.
  • Bed rest for longer time.

The peripheral vertigo is mostly associated with ageing and certain medications, but some people may also experience Central Vertigo caused because of imbalance in sensory pathways and some parts of brain. The main cause of central vertigo is migraine headache.

Common Symptoms

The symptoms of vertigo may start even before the actual spinning. The continuous ringing sound in ears may be alarming. Actual symptoms of vertigo are experienced usually when the head is moved or any sudden change in position takes place. Fast movements may trigger the symptoms. The common symptoms include –

  • Spinning
  • Imbalance
  • Pulling sensation
  • Sense of equilibrium lost
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Abnormal eye movement
  • Sweating

Treatment

The treatment of vertigo can range from medication to surgery. The individual ability to cope with the internal imbalance and train the brain would decide the course of treatment. Some types of mild vertigo symptoms may go away without any medication, while for others there would be need for medication for prolonged period as recommended by the medical practitioner.

The vestibular rehabilitation may also be prescribed where the brain is trained through certain physical therapy. Vestibular system is strengthened with this exercise. The need for surgery arises only in the event of serious underlying condition like tumor or injury of brain or neck.

Vertigo is the problems that will make the world around you spin, but proper care and appropriate eating habits may keep it at bay!
